How to Prepare Your Roof for Hail Season

Spring is here!  The sun is shining, flowers are blooming, and the days are getting longer. Nothing can take away from the beauty and excitement of spring. Nothing, that is, except having to spend a bunch of money fixing your roof from hail damage.

Here in Dallas-Fort Worth, spring is the time for hail storms.  They’re always a pain, and they can cause a lot of damage.  One of the questions we get all the time is, what can I do to prevent storm damage?  Here are some things to remember to help get you through another hail season here in Texas.

It’s Mother Nature 

Before we can even begin to discuss ways to secure your home and prepare your roof for hail season, there’s something important you have to understand. No matter what you do, no matter how many steps you take to try and keep your home safe, we are all at the mercy of Mother Nature. 

Some people could get lucky. They could put on a new roof and have it sit there for 20 years or more and never have any issues with a Texas hail storm.  Other people may put on a brand new roof, and then get hit with a major, damaging storm two or three years in a row.  There’s no way to predict what’s going to happen.  But if you know there’s a possibility of getting hit with bad storms - and if you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, there is always that possibility - then you should at least put together a plan for what to do if your home is hit hard.  

The Plan

So what can you do to prepare?  While there isn’t anything you can do to prevent storms from hitting, there are a few things you can do to prepare to face the realities of living through a Texas spring.  Here are three things you should do to make sure you are ready to deal with any damage that may arise during hail season.

1.  Keep up with basic repairs

The number one thing you can do to make sure your roof will make it through a hard storm season is to keep up with all needed repairs. The cost of roof repair can sometimes cause people to put off needed maintenance, as long as there’s no water visibly getting into the home. This is a mistake, not only because moisture may be leaking in and causing damage in places you can’t see, but also because it makes your roof more vulnerable to further damage during a storm.  As you go through the fall and winter, keep an eye on your roof and make sure there’s no damage showing, no shingles missing, or any other indications that it needs some upkeep. While it may cost a little bit to get it patched up, it could save you from facing more serious problems when the storms roll in.

2. Wait for major repairs

While you want to take care of basic upkeep and minor problems before the storms start, if you notice any issues starting to form at the beginning of the year, it may be better to wait and fix them after the storms have passed. If you develop a leak or other problem in February or March, it’s probably better to use a temporary solution to get you through the hail season.  What you don’t want to do is to pay for major work or even a roof replacement at the beginning of the year, and then risk serious damage from hail right after.  It’s better to put a bandaid on and get through the spring.  That way, if hail does hit and your roof is totaled, you won’t have recently sunk thousands of dollars into it. 

3. Have a roofer you trust

The most important thing you can do to keep your roof safe is to have a roofing contractor you trust.  They should be able to help you prepare for any storms that may hit. And you should feel confident that they’ll give you the best recommendations for your home - not just for their wallets. This is especially important when you may need to call for an emergency roof repair during a storm.
