What are the top-rated roof shingles? From our perspective, there are only four worth talking about. Two are the biggest and oldest, and two are newer and smaller, but their quality puts them right up there with the big names.  Picking which shingles are best for roofing takes a lot of experience, so we’re laying out the pros and cons of each brand.  That way you can have a good idea of which will serve your needs the best when you start talking to your roofer.

The key things we look for in a roofing shingle are quality, durability, and price.  Some brands are great overall, and some have a special feature that makes them stand out.  Here are the top roofing shingle brands of 2022:

GAF

This is the best overall shingle.  GAF has been around providing quality roofing supplies since 1886, so they know a thing or two about manufacturing roofing materials that keep their customers happy.   Their products are top-rated, with great durability and a long life expectancy.  They also have a wide range of options, from economic to designer shingles.  Their wood grain color line is popular for its natural look.

While GAF shingles are always top quality with a number of options, they can be a little more expensive than some other top brands.  And, though they offer a good selection of options, they don’t have as many as some of the smaller niche brands.  However, they do a great job of hitting that sweet spot, blending high quality, fair prices, and variety that has made them the number 1 selling brand in America. In our experience, for most people, GAF is going to be a great option for their homes.

Owens Corning

Another brand that’s been around for nearly a hundred years, Owens Corning and GAF have been in competition with each other for a long time.  That’s helped them learn from each other, and find ways to outshine each other in special ways.  For Owens Corning, that special niche has become durability.  While GAF is a strong shingle, Owens Corning has created the EverGuard technology, which makes theirs 50% stronger than other brands.  That’s very impressive.  So, if you’re worried about damage from storms - we do get a lot of hail in Dallas-Fort Worth - then Owens Corning could be the brand for you.

The biggest drawback for Owens Corning is that they have limited options.  If you’re looking for different colors or want a unique look for your home, they aren’t going to be able to offer you much.  This helps keep their production costs down, which means they have some of the least expensive shingles on the market. But if variety is important to you, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

CertainTeed

When we say that CertainTeed is a newer brand of shingles, we don’t mean that they just popped up last week.  CertainTeed has been around since the 1940s, and their decades of experience have helped them create some of the best shingles out there.  They are particularly good if you’re looking for more options for your roof.  CertainTeed has one of the largest selections of types of shingles, as well as a big variety of colors to choose from.

All of that variety comes at a cost, though. CertainTeed’s shingles are high quality, but they’re also expensive.  And their extended warranty can add 15% to the cost of your roof.  It’s expensive coverage, and it requires that you use CertainTeed for every level of your roof - not just the shingles.  That can add a lot to the overall cost. Of course, you don’t have to get the extended warranty, so if the variety is important to you, you can still make this brand work at a reasonable cost, just without as much protection.

Atlas

Our last brand in the list of best-rated roof shingles is Atlas.  We like them because their sealant - the glue that holds them down and connects all the shingles into one strong structure - is the best on the market. That’s important in a place like Dallas-Fort Worth because we can have pretty high winds kick up during some of our storms. The strong sealant of the atlas shingles helps to make sure that your tiles don’t go sailing off.

That sealant can also be a bit of a negative too, though.  While it’s the strongest out there, it requires sunlight to seal properly.  That’s not a big issue here in Texas, but it does mean that if you’re installing a new roof in the winter or fall, you’ll probably want to look at one of the other brands or hold off until the next summer.

Each of these brands has its pros and cons, but after years of repairing old roofs and installing new ones, we’re confident that each of these brands is a good option. It really comes down to your personal needs and tastes.  Making a final decision can be difficult, but we’re here to help.
