If you’ve been in a situation where your roof started leaking during a storm, you may have wondered, can roofers work in the rain? The short answer is no. While there are a few rare exceptions, roofing in the rain should be avoided at all costs.

If you’re having a major roofing problem, there are a few things you can do to patch things up while you wait for an emergency roofer. But one of them is not roofing in the rain.

Why Roofing in the Rain Is Not a Good Idea

We know it can be frustrating to have to wait until a storm blows over before your leaking roof can be fixed, but trust us, the benefits outweigh the cost on this one. Roofing in the rain can not only be dangerous for the roofers - one wrong slip could mean death - but it’s also practically impossible to keep moisture out of your roof and home.

Any moisture that gets under the shingles and underlayment is bad news for a roof and can lead to mold and rot. Trying to fix a roof in the rain could make your roof worse in the long run, meaning even more repairs in the near future.

We at Parish Roofing Solutions pride ourselves on getting the job done right the first time. We don’t want you to have to keep paying for repairs, so that’s why we avoid roofing in the rain.

Exceptions to the Rule

There are a few rare cases where roofing in the rain can’t be avoided. Usually, this happens if there’s a roofing emergency and a storm rolls in while we’re already working on the problem.

There shouldn’t be any issues as long as the roof is “dried in” before the rain comes. This is when the underlayment has already been laid down, so that no moisture can get inside.

Drying in the roof can only be done though if you have the right type of underlayment. Oftentimes, a paper underlayment is used, which provides zero protection from the elements. That’s why we always use synthetic felt underlayment, which is durable and waterproof.

Conclusion

There are a few rare exceptions that require roofing in the rain, such as a roofing emergency that needs immediate attention. But even in these cases, this can only be done if the roof is dried in first with felt underlayment.

So as a general rule of thumb, it’s best to avoid roofing in the rain at all costs. The risks simply outweigh the benefits. It’s not only dangerous to the roofers who would have to work on slippery surfaces and try to see through the pouring rain, but it’s also dangerous for the family who would have to live under a roof that was put up in the rain.

Roofing in the rain can create trapped moisture within the roof, leading to problems of unavoidable mold and rotting. These issues can then cause further roofing damage, meaning more money put into more repairs later on down the road.
