Preparing Your Roof for Winter - Texas Roofing Blog

Winter is on its way. And it’s not just reindeer hoofs and sleigh tracks that could damage your roof this year. A winter wonderland can put a lot of strain on the structure and integrity of your roof. Even here in Texas, the changing seasons cause a lot of stress, so it’s important to prepare your roof for winter.  While houses are built to withstand all kinds of weather and natural events, the natural cycle of the year puts pressures on your roof as it reacts to the different temperatures.  It’s important to understand these cycles so that you know how to prepare your roof for winter.  With that in mind, here are some facts and winter roof tips.

How the Seasons Affect Your Roof

All seasons pose unique challenges for your home, but the extremes of summer heat and winter cold create natural wear and tear that cause your roof to deteriorate.  Understanding the damage they cause and how to address it proactively is an important first step in extending your roof's life.

The Heat of Summer

The heat of the summer sun is a major factor here in Texas.  Sometimes, when you step out on a hot summer day it can feel like you’re baking under the heat of the sun. That may just be an expression for you, but it’s actually a very accurate way to describe what’s happening with your roof.

The high heat basically cooks your shingles, the sealant, and the caulking, and it wears down the rubber gaskets that fill gaps between parts of your roof.  If that sounds scary, there’s a reason. When these things bake and break down, they leave your roof vulnerable to leaks.

The worst part is, you probably won’t even know there’s a problem. While the heat is high, everything becomes very pliable. The shingles, asphalt, everything becomes like a soft goo. The real problems won’t start until they begin to cool down.

Winter Worries

After the heat has done its work on your roof, after the asphalt has loosened and the gaskets have dried out, the cooler temperatures autumn help to set everything again. The problem is, things may not be in the same places or the same conditions that they were before. That leaves your roof vulnerable.

Then, when winter comes and the temperature drops to the 30s and 40s, that’s when the real trouble starts. In those conditions, worn gaskets start to crack and break. The sealant that we apply over the whole roof, over the nails and joints to keep any moisture from getting in, can break, peel, and crack off.  All of this leaves you vulnerable to leaks, especially when the spring rains start coming in. That’s why it’s so important to prepare your roof for winter before the problems start.

How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

So, with the wear and tear that the changing seasons can put on your roof, what can you do to stop deterioration and leaks?

The answer is to be proactive.

While you can do roofing in the winter, it’s best to prepare before the cold weather starts wreaking havoc on your roof. That’s why Parish Roofing offers a yearly roofing tune-up to make sure your home is safe and taken care of.

We come out and do a full roof inspection, looking for exposed nails, worn gaskets, missing shingles, flashing that coming away from walls or chimneys - anything that needs to be touched up so that your roof is in perfect shape before the cold weather comes in.  We’ll put in new caulking, shingles, gaskets, or anything you need to have your roof at 100%.

Why Bother?

Not everyone needs to have their roof inspected every year. But if your roof is 7 or 8 years old or more, you should be taking the time to make sure it’s tuned up each year.

The reason is simple - no one wants to replace a full roof, and getting your yearly winter tune-up adds years and years to the life of your roof. Because we are able to identify any problems when they are small and inexpensive, we keep your home safe and stop normal wear and tear from snowballing into something major.

You’ll rest easy knowing that your roof is water-tight, and you’ll save money by significantly extending the life of your roof. So give us a call today, and let us come out and give your roof the tune-up it needs before the cold weather settles in.
